The Black Book Of English Canada

Auteur : Normand Lester
la langue : en
Éditeur: McClelland & Stewart Limited
Date de sortie : 2002

Normand Lester, a journalist with Radio-Canada (the French-language equivalent of the CBC) stirred up a hornet’s nest when he revealed that the federal government had secretly funded television’s Heritage Minutes which, in his view, provided a sanitized version of our shared history. He was subsequently, controversially, let go. The Black Book of Canada is his impassioned defence of his native province and an implicit repudiation of the anglophone media’s unfair, yet all-too-common attacks on Quebec and Quebecers. While English Canada may think itself a “just society,” in this highly controversial book – which sold 50,000 copies in French – Normand Lester chronicles English-Canadian intolerance: the expulsion of the Acadians; Lord Durham’s anti-French policies; the hanging of Louis Riel; R. B. Bennett’s funding of anti-Semitic publications; and the internment of Japanese Canadians in the Second World War. Lester argues that the myth of two equal, amicable co-founders of the nation, a myth actively promoted by the federal government over recent decades, ignores the fact that there will always be two incompatible national histories.

The Little Black Book Of Innovation

Auteur : Scott D. Anthony
la langue : en
Éditeur: Harvard Business Press
Date de sortie : 2012

Innovation transforms companies and markets. It's the key to solving vexing social problems. And it makes or breaks professional careers. But for all the enthusiasm the topic inspires, the practice of innovation - how to do it-has remained stubbornly impenetrable. No longer. In The Little Black Book of Innovation, leading thinker Scott D. Anthony draws from research, Innosight fieldwork with global giants such as Procter & Gamble, and personal experience launching and investing in start-up companies to demystify the discipline of innovation. With wit and remarkable insight born of years of both leading and teaching innovation, Anthony presents a simple definition of the concept, breaks down the essential differences between its various types, and illuminates its vital role in organizational success and personal growth.

Programming Reality

Auteur : Zoë Druick
la langue : en
Éditeur: Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press
Date de sortie : 2008-08-01

Programming Reality: Perspectives on English-Canadian Television, the first anthology dedicated to analyses of Canadian television content, is a collection of original, interdisciplinary articles, combining textual analysis and political economy of communications. It explores the television that has thrived in the Canadian regulatory and cultural context: namely, programs that straddle the border between reality and fiction or even blur it. The conceptual basis of this collection is the hybrid nature of television fare: the widely theorized notion that all mediations of reality involve fiction in the form of narrative or symbolic shaping. Each of the contributions here is a reminder, too, of the significant relationship of television to nation building in Canada—to the imaginative work involved in thinking through the relations that constitute nations, citizens, and communities. The collection focuses on English-language Canadian television because the imperatives guiding its texts are markedly different from those pertaining to their French-lanugage counterparts. The collection, therefore, develops a nuance of perspective on the cultural and political economic specificities that inform the imaginative work of television production for English Canada.

Fear Of A Black Nation

Auteur : David Austin
la langue : en
Éditeur: Between the Lines
Date de sortie : 2013-05-27

In the 1960s, for at least a brief moment, Montreal became what seemed an unlikely centre of Black Power and the Caribbean left. In October 1968 the Congress of Black Writers at McGill University brought together well-known Black thinkers and activists from Canada, the United States, Africa, and the Caribbean, people like C.L.R. James, Stokely Carmichael, Miriam Makeba, Rocky Jones, and Walter Rodney. Within months of the Congress, a Black-led protest at Sir George Williams University (now Concordia) exploded on the front pages of newspapers across the country, raising state security fears about Montreal as the new hotbed of international Black radical politics.
